Blue Cross Update

Pony Club April 2013
National Equine Health Survey 5–11 May
It is that time of year to sign up to NEHS. There are some great prizes to be won as well which include: Ariat boots, jump wings, Royal Vet College tour, 3 x £100 Spillers vouchers and Olympia tickets!
Survey information
Blue Cross, as you may already be aware, runs the National Equine Health Survey (NEHS) in partnership with the British Equine Veterinary Association. Now held annually, the next survey is scheduled for 5–11 May 2013 and we would be delighted if you could help us encourage as many owners and keepers of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules in the UK to take part.
NEHS has been running for two years and is helping us to discover more about common health issues in horses, such as coughs, skin diseases and lameness, with the aim of improving the health and welfare of horses in the UK in the future. Professor Josh Slater, professor of equine clinical studies at the Royal Veterinary College, has been working with Blue Cross on the survey and he interprets the data. The results will be accessible to all supporting organisations.
To secure the long-term success of NEHS, it is essential that a culture change in the UK horse industry is achieved to make “NEHS Week” a fixture on the calendar of all UK horse owners. This can only be achieved if all sectors of the horse industry buy in to NEHS and support and promote participation to their members. We are on the cusp of success and of achieving a level of endemic disease surveillance not achieved in any European country, but we are not there yet.

How can you help?

Helping promote

To make it easy for you to help promote this worthwhile cause to your members and supporters we are putting together a special NEHS participation toolkit. This will include:

  • news stories for newsletters
  • posters and leaflets
  • pro forma social media “reminder” campaign
  • endorsements from celebrity riders
  • prize incentives for participants

Taking part

To take part simply visit our website and register now. A reminder email will be sent to you before the survey opens. During the week of 5–11 May simply log on and complete the survey about your horse’s health during the snapshot week.
To find out more or to order the participation toolkit please contact me at Gemma.Taylor@bluecross.org.uk or NEHS@bluecross.org.uk. You can also visit www.bluecross.org.uk/NEHS
